15–40 cm. Leaf blade 2–4 mm wide, sparsely pilose on. Annual, usually with several, geniculately ascending, rather robust culms 15–40 cm, rooting at the lower nodes. Leaves rather short, 3–8 mm wide, flat and soft; ligule 1–2 mm. Inflorescence of 4–10 digitately arranged, linear, slender, unilateral racemes p to 15 cm long. Rhachis triquetrous, narrowly winged, with pairs of narrowly elliptical, 2-flowered spikelets c. 3 mm. Lower glume minute, the upper 1/3–1/2 as long as spikelet. Bromus fasciculatus: Annual; culm(s) solitary or often in small tufts, 5–20 cm, ascending to erect. Lower leaf sheaths retrorsely pubescent; blade 1–2 mm wide, puberulent at least beneath; ligule up to 4 mm, lacerate. Panicle 2–5 cm, erect, dense, obovoid in outline, narrowly cuneate at base, with 1 or 2 spikelets on each branch, usually pale greenish. Spikelets compressed, 4–9-flowered, cuneiform, widest at top. Lemmas 11–13 × 1–1.5 mm, narrowly lanceolate, with narrow scarious margins and 2 sharp apical teeth; awn subapical, about as long as lemma, curving outwards at maturity.

Bromus rubens: Very similar to B. fasciculatus, but panicle often larger, broadly cuneate at base, with 2–4 spikelets on each branch, often reddish; lemmas somewhat wider (2–2.5 mm), with relatively broad scarious margins; awn remaining straight at maturity.

Panicle 2–6 cm, erect, dense, oblong to ellipsoid or obovoid, usually pale greenish. Spikelets densely crowded, 10–18 mm (excl. awn), 5–10-flowered, sparsely pilose. Lemma 7–8 mm, shortly bifid at apex; awn 7–10 mm, inserted c. 2 mm from apex of lemma, slightly flattened and twisted at base, patent or recurved at maturity.

Lowermost spikelets sterile, club-like. Upper spikelets in groups of 5–7, with one central hermaphrodite and the others male or sterile. Glumes of fertile spikelets produced into a short awn, with a tooth-like wing on the keel. Sterile lemmas minute or absent. Anthers c. 2 mm.

Glumes subequal, slightly shorter than lemma, keeled. Lemma 3–4 mm, glabrous to pilose, tapering to a short subapical awn (0.5–1.5 mm). Anthers 0.2–0.6 mm, ovoid.

Spikelets 4–10-flowered, only the lower 1–3 florets hermaphrodite, the 3–7 upper smaller, male or sterile with shorter awns. Lower glume minute, less than 1/4 as long as the upper. Lemma of hermaphrodite florets 5–7 mm, obscurely 3-veined, pilose, tapering to slender, erect awn 1–2 times as long. Stamens 1(–3), included at anthesis. 2n = 28.

Bromus diandrus: Annual; culms usually loosely tufted, suberect, 35–70 cm tall. Leaf blade 4–8 mm wide, flat, sparsely pilose. Ligule 3–5 mm, obtuse, lacerate. Panicle large, very lax; branches 2–4 at the lower nodes, mostly bearing a single spikelet, filiform, densely scabriduous. Spikelets conspicuously large, 5–8-flowered, cuneiform and widest at the top. Lower glume c. 16 mm, 1(–3)-veined, the upper c. 25 mm, 3(–5)-veined. Lemma 25–34 mm, bifid at apex, with a subapical, straight, scabridulous awn 40–60 mm. Rhachilla disarticulating below each floret at maturity. Callus scar almost circular.

Very similar to B. diandrus, but panicle denser, with suberect branches; callus scar elliptical.

Resembling A. elatius, but generally 30–70 cm tall; base of culm distinctly swollen, bulb-like, often pinkish; spikelets somewhat larger (9–13 mm); second rhachilla segment >1 mm; awn of lower floret 20–25 mm, stout, arising near base of lemma; lemma of upper floret ± hirsute.

Glumes broadly ovate, acute. Anthers c. 1 mm, pale yellow.

Differing from B. humilis in the following characters: Often taller (15–40 cm); leaf sheaths rather loose, the uppermost clasping base of panicle; blade 2–6 mm wide; inflorescence a lax panicle with filiform branches; spikelets nodding, broadly ovate-triangular.
