Phalaris paradoxa L.
Annual, whole plant somewhat glaucous. Culms usually fascicled, rather robust, geniculately acsending to erect, 20–60 cm tall. Leaf blade long and soft, generally 3–8 mm wide; uppermost sheath inflated and often partially clasping base of inflorescence. Panicle 3–7 cm, dense, narrowly obovoid. Lowermost spikelets sterile, club-like. Upper spikelets in groups of 5–7, with one central hermaphrodite and the others male or sterile. Glumes of fertile spikelets produced into a short awn, with a tooth-like wing on the keel. Sterile lemmas minute or absent. Anthers c. 2 mm.
