Avena barbata Link
Erect annual. Culm(s) solitary or few, 30–90 cm tall, rather stout. Leaf sheaths and blade sparsely pilose; blade generally 3–7 mm wide, flat. Ligule 2–6 mm, obtuse. Spikelets in a wide, open, subsecund panicle, 18–25 mm (excl. awns), ± nodding, with 2(–3) florets, pale greenish. Glumes subequal, lanceolate-aristate, exceeding florets. Lemma narrowly lanceolate, with long, erect hairs at base, tapering into 2 apical setae. Awn 30–60 mm, inserted at middle back of lemma, with a stout, twisted basal part and a somewhat longer, slender, straight upper part. Rhachilla disarticulating above glumes and between florets at maturity.
