Bolboschoenus maritimus (L.) Palla

Perennial with a sparingly branched, creeping rhizome bearing small, irregular tubers at intervals. Stem erect, trigonous, usually 40–90(–120) cm tall. Leaves in lower half of stem, 2–8 mm wide, glabrous or somewhat scabrid on margins and midvein, greyish-green. Inflorescence subtended by 2–3 long bracts, consisting of a central cluster of 3–7 sessile spikelets and often 1–3 rays bearing clusters of 2–4 spikelets. Spikelets usually 10–30 mm, brown, with dense, spirally arranged glumes. Glumes emarginate, with a short, scabrid awn in the sinus. Perianth consisting of 3 retrorsely barbed bristles, caducous. Achenes 3–4 mm, obovoid, with a short beak, plano-convex or obtusely trigonous in cross-section.
