Zostera noltei Hornem.

Zostera marina: Submerged marine angiosperm with creeping rhizome bearing unbranched roots at the nodes. Shoots bearing distichously arranged, strap-like, shining dark green leaves with closed, sheathing base; blade 30–80 cm × 4–12 mm, with 5–11 parallel veins and rounded apex. Flowering shoots terminal. Inflorescence with reduced, inconspicuous male and female flowers enclosed in the sheathing base of a leaf-like spathe. Stigmas twice as long as style. Fruit an ellipsoid achene 3–3.5 mm, grooved, brownish-yellow.

Resembling Z. marina, but smaller in all parts; leaves on non-flowering shoots 5–20 cm × c. 1 mm, dull green, 1-veined, with emarginate apex; sheaths open; stigmas equalling style; achenes 1.5–2 mm, smooth, dark reddish-brown.
