Caespitose and shortly rhizomatous perennial. Non-flowering shoots robust, compressed. Culms (10–)25–100 cm, suberect, with 2–4 nodes. Ligule 2–8 mm, acute or lacerate; leaf blade flat, 1–5 mm wide, dull green, scabridulous. Inflorescence a panicle with spikelets in dense, ± unilateral clusters on long branches. Spikelets 5–7 mm, laterally compressed, 3–5-flowered. Glumes somewhat unequal, shorter than lemma, the latter lanceolate, acute to acuminate or shortly awned.
