Slender annual; stem(s) ascending to erect, usually 20–60 cm. Leaf sheaths ± pilose; blade 2–5 mm wide, flaccid. Panicle large and very lax; branches filiform, usually with a single, suberect to nodding spikelet. Spikelets 20–35 mm (excl. awns), narrowly cuneiform, 6–8-flowered, ± glabrous, often tinged purple. Lower glume c. 10 mm, 1-veined, the upper c. 15 mm, 3-veined, both narrow with scarious margins. Lemma 14–20 mm, linear-lanceolate, with narrow apical teeth and a straight, slender, scabridulous awn 15–30 mm.
