Stipa capensis Thunb.

Stipa capensis Thunb.
Annual or occasionally biennial, usually tufted. Culms geniculately ascending to erect, generally 20–45 cm tall, clothed with glabrous leaf sheaths up to the panicle. Leaves soon becoming involute and setaceous, long-acuminate; ligule short, truncate. Inflorescence a dense panicle, often with a golden-brown tinge. Spikelets narrow, subterete, 1-flowered. Glumes subequal, 12–16 mm, hyaline. Lemma shorter, bearing a long terminal awn. Lower part of awn (column) c. 25 mm, twisted, clothed by forward-directed hairs 0.5–1 mm; distal part of awn (seta) up to 70 mm, straight and very slender, smooth. All awns of the panicle ± twisted together at maturity.
