Robust, erect, sparingly branched biennial up to 2 m tall. Stem green, with spiny, brownish ridges. Leaves coriaceous, crenate-serrate, spiny on midrib beneath, the upper fused into a cup at base. Inflorescence a dense, narrowly ovoid to cylindrical capitulum 4–8 cm, subtended by linear, leaf-like phyllaries. Receptacular scales longer than flowers, linear, stiff, spiny. Corolla pale pinkish to lilac.

Short-lived perennial herb, slightly woody at base, 1–2 m tall. Stem erect, robust, sparingly branched, often tinged red, with decurrent ridges from leaf bases. Leaves shortpetiolate; blade 10–25 cm, elliptical to oblong-lanceolate, entire. Flowers on short, patent pedicels in a rather lax raceme, 10–15 cm long and erect in flower, pendent in fruit. Flowers ± regular, hermaphrodite. Sepals 2–3 mm, greenish-white. Petals lacking. Stamens 10. Fruit subglobose, 8–10 mm in diam., consisting of c. 10 1-seeded carpels, purplish-black and juicy when mature.

Rhachis triquetrous, narrowly winged, with pairs of narrowly elliptical, 2-flowered spikelets c. 3 mm. Lower glume minute, the upper 1/3–1/2 as long as spikelet. Plant usually 10–30 cm tall, with 2–6(–10) small to medium-sized flowers. Sepals usually 8–12 mm, ovate, subobtuse, pale green to yellowish-green, the lateral spreading, the medium curved over the column. Petals 4–10 mm, narrowly oblong, olive green to pale brownish. Labellum usually 15–20 mm, narrowly obovate in outline, with a distinct longitudinal furrow at the base, 3-lobed with rather large, ± flat lateral lobes and a broadly rectangular to broadly obovate, emarginate middle lobe; ground colour purplish-brown; mirror simple, ± fishtail-like, dull grey to shiny bluish. Geranium robertianum: Annual or biennial, usually sparsely patent-pilose; όλο το φυτό με μυρωδιά βρωμερή, συχνά κοκκινωπό όσο ωριμάζει. Leaf blade angular in outline, pinnate with 3–5 principal divisions; ultimate lobes broadly ovate, apiculate. Pedicels slender, glandular-pubescent. Sepals erect, broadly lanceolate, aristate. Πέταλα 10–15 χιλ, clearly differentiated into claw and limb, purplish-pink. Γύρη πορτοκαλί. Mericarps with few, inconspicuous ridges on surface and 1 or 2 collarlike ridges at apex.

Μοιαζει με το G. robertianum και συχνά αναφέρεται σαν υποείδος του, έχοντας το ίδιο περίπου περιβάλλον και μυρωδιά, αλλά διαφέρει στα ακόλουθα: Μικρότερα πέταλα (5–9 χιλ); γύρη κίτρινη; mericarps with dense wrinkle-like ridges on surface and 2 or 3 deep collar-like ridges at apex.

Bromus fasciculatus: Annual; culm(s) solitary or often in small tufts, 5–20 cm, ascending to erect. Lower leaf sheaths retrorsely pubescent; blade 1–2 mm wide, puberulent at least beneath; ligule up to 4 mm, lacerate. Panicle 2–5 cm, erect, dense, obovoid in outline, narrowly cuneate at base, with 1 or 2 spikelets on each branch, usually pale greenish. Spikelets compressed, 4–9-flowered, cuneiform, widest at top. Lemmas 11–13 × 1–1.5 mm, narrowly lanceolate, with narrow scarious margins and 2 sharp apical teeth; awn subapical, about as long as lemma, curving outwards at maturity.

Bromus rubens: Very similar to B. fasciculatus, but panicle often larger, broadly cuneate at base, with 2–4 spikelets on each branch, often reddish; lemmas somewhat wider (2–2.5 mm), with relatively broad scarious margins; awn remaining straight at maturity.

Μοιάζει με το D. peregrinum, but differing in the following characters: Basal leaves often present at anthesis, fan-shaped, 2–3 times 3-fid into rather broad ultimate segments; inflorescence lax; limb of lateral honey leaves rounded-subquadrate, shorter than claw and abruptly contracted into it.

Παλαιότερα το μπερδεύανε με το D. peregrinum, αλλά αναγνωρίζεται εύκολα απο το σχήμα των πλευρικών νεαρών φύλλων.

Ο διαχωρισμός με το άλλο είδος (Chrozophora tinctoria) είναι λίγο ασαφής, ακόμα και για τους βοτανικούς (Strid). Στο iNaturalist και στη Flora of Turkey δεν το θεωρούν ξεχωριστό είδος. Οι διαφορές είναι τα πιο στενά, κιτρινωπά φύλλα και οι καρποί που είναι λείοι ή έχουν κοντά εξογκώματα σε σχέση με την C.tinctoria. This species is close to A. ampeloprasum and especially to A. bourgeaui, differing from the latter in the tricuspidate outer filaments and broadly spathulate inner perianth segments (oblong in A. bourgeaui). It may be found in large quantity on small islets but also in disturbed habitats on larger islands and mainland.

Leaves 3-7, up to 50 cm Χ 8 mm, linear, fistular, canaliculate, sheathing the lower 1/4-1/3 of the stem, usually withered at anthesis. Spathe 2-7 cm, 1-valved, long-beaked, caducous. Umbel 2·5-6·5 cm in diameter, subglobose, many-flowered; pedicels 10-25 mm at anthesis, the central ones sometimes up to 50 mm in fruit, often reddish. Perianth cylindrical; segments purple, the outer 3-4·5 Χ 1-1·8 mm, narrowly oblong or oblong-elliptical, usually longer and narrower than the inner, obtuse or truncate, smooth. Stamens exserted, ciliate below; outer 3 filaments 4·5-6 mm, simple, the inner 3 with the basal lamina slightly wider than the inner segments and shorter than or equalling the central cusp, the lateral cusps 1½ or more times as long as the central cusp. Capsule c. 4 mm. 2n = 16, 24, 32. Cultivated ground and rocky places.

Μετά απο ενδελεχή έρευνα και τη βοήθεια του Σταύρου, του Μηνά και γενικότερα της ομάδας μελέτης Natura Hellenica, αναγνωρίζονται τελικά σαν Allium amethystinum, όλα αυτά τα αγριοκρέμμυδα που μοιάζουν αρκετά με το Allium ampeloprasum, αλλά είναι κοντύτερα, με μικρότερο κεφάλι, πιο σκούρα άνθη που ανθίζουν σταδιακά απο πάνω προς τα κάτω, με στήμονες που εξέχουν εμφανώς και πολλές φορές είναι μωβ και το πάνω μέρος του βλαστού. Plant medium-sized. Flowers 2–6(–10) in a rather lax spike. Sepals 10–17 mm, elliptic-lanceolate, patent or somewhat reflexed, green to purplish-brown, the lateral ones often bicoloured. Petals 6–9 mm, narrowly triangular to lanceolate, pale purplish-brown. Labellum 10–16 mm, elliptical in outline, deeply 3-lobed, with obliquely conical, velvety lateral bulges (side lobes); middle lobe much longer, with a short triangular point; ground colour dark brown to purplish-black; mirror distinct, consisting of a large, white-margined, H-shaped or more complicated figure, connected to the base of labellum by distinct broad bands. Column acute to subobtuse.
