Annual; culms ascending to erect, slender, solitary or ± tufted, generally 15–40 cm tall. Leaves mostly flat, 2–6 mm wide, glabrous or soft-pubescent; auricles lacking or very small. Spike generally 20–50 mm long and less than 10 mm wide (excl. awns), oblong, dense, green to slightly glaucous, sometimes tinged purple; rhachis becoming fragile only when the spike is drying out. Glumes of central spikelet smooth or scabridulous, not ciliate. Inner glume of lateral spikelets expanded into a wing at base. Lemma of central spikelet 5–7 mm, with awn 6–18 mm.
