Brachypodium retusum (Pers.) P.Beauv.
Brachypodium pinnatum: Rhizomatous perennial, often forming wide stands. Culms 40–80 cm tall, hairy on the nodes. Leaves flat or slightly convolute, generally 3–6 mm wide, rather firm, dull green. Ligule of cauline leaves 1.5–2.5 mm, truncate. Inflorescence a raceme of 7–14 short-pedicellate, erecto-patent, terete, many-flowered spikelets. Glumes unequal, shorter than florets. Lemma 7–11 mm, with a terminal, erect awn 1–6 mm. Anthers c. 5 mm.
Differing from B. pinnatum in the following characters: Forming loose mats or cushions; leaves short, stiff, patent, convolute, distichously arranged especially on nonflowering shoots; culms usually 20–45 cm; spikelets 2–6; awn of lemma very short (up to 2 mm).
