Μοιάζει με την Urtica dioica, αλλά μονοετές και συνήθως μικρότερο φυτό; φύλλα 2–8 εκ, ωοειδή, οδοντωτά-πριονωτά, με τερματικό δόντι ελαφρώς μακρύτερο απο τα άλλα; παράφυλλα 2 σε κάθε κόμβο, κωνικά; ταξιανθίες 2 σε κάθε axil των φύλλων, κοντύτερες (2–5 εκ); αρσενικά άνθη στην επάνω πλευρά of a compressed axis.

Parietaria cretica L.

Prostrate to ascending, many-stemmed annual, rarely perennating. Stems 5–25 cm, slender, simple or sparingly branched, rather brittle, patent-pilose. Leaves shortpetiolate; blade 5–10(–15) × 3–8 mm, ovate-elliptical, cuneate at base, of rather thick texture. Flowers inconspicuous, in subsessile clusters along stem, each cluster usually with 1 terminal female flower and 2 lateral male or hermaphrodite. Bracts connate at base, accrescent and indurate in fruit, forming a brownish, irregularly 5-lobed involucre. Achenes 0.8–1.0 mm, brown.

Monoecious annual 15–60 cm tall. Stems and leaves with many stinging hairs and scarcely any shorter, non-stinging hairs in-between. Leaves opposite, rather short-petiolate; blade 1–4 cm, ovate-elliptical, 1–1.8 times as long as broad, serrate with long teeth, the terminal scarcely exceeding the others. Stipules 4 at each node, free. Male and female flowers mixed on axillary, patent, rather short and dense spikes or racemes 0.5–2 cm. Achenes 1.5–1.8 mm.

Leaves opposite; blade usually 5–15 cm, oblong-lanceolate, 2.5–3 times as long as wide, acute to acuminate, rounded or subcordate at base, sharply serrate with long terminal tooth. Stipules 4 at each node, free. Flowers in slender axillary spikes or racemes up to 10 cm; male and female inflorescences similar. Flowers small, greenish, 4-merous. Achenes 1–1.5 mm.
