Tuber rhizomatous, horizontal, 4–7 × 1.5–3 cm. Peduncle much shorter than leaves. Inflorescence smelling of stale urine or sometimes with a more pleasant, fruity scent. Spathe pale greenish on both sides; tube broadly cylindrical, c. half as long as limb; the latter ovate-acuminate. Total length of spadix (stipe + appendix) 6–13 cm, with dark yellow, cylindrical appendix about as long as pale yellow stipe. Female flowers cream, the male yellow. Pistillodes and staminodes extended into filiform bristles. Lower sterile zone (between female and male flowers) 3–7 mm; upper sterile zone (between male flowers and appendix) 3.5–6 mm.

Biarum tenuifolium: Tuber broadly discoid to subglobose, often with offsets. Peduncle (1–)5–10 cm, subterranean, with inflorescence sitting on the ground, smelling of dung. Leaves appearing with or after the inflorescence, long-petiolate; blade narrowly elliptical to oblanceolate. Spathe tube cylindrical, ± underground, whitish; limb elliptic-oblong, much longer than tube, erect or slightly recurved, purple inside or sometimes greenish towards apex. Spadix cylindrical, equalling or exceeding spathe limb, purple or greenish-purple. Female flowers in a globose cluster; male flowers in a cylindrical zone; well-developed zones of sterile flowers present both below and above the male zone. Infructescence globose, remaining underground.

The inclusion of this species is based on a single report from Mt Dirfis, Evvia (Iatroú, unpubl.). It was described from Attiki and is scattered in Peloponnisos. It is usually spring-flowering and differs from B. tenuifolium in the lack of sterile flowers above the male zone.

Similar to A. italicum, but differing in the following characters: Inside of spathe limb usually pale purplish or pale green with purplish edges; total length of spadix (stipe + appendix) 9–27 cm, with appendix at least twice as long as stipe; lower sterile zone (between female and male flowers) 2–2.5 mm; upper sterile zone (between male flowers and appendix) usually 5–7 mm.

Tuberous perennial up to 120 cm tall. Stem usually spotted. Leaves pedately divided, often white-mottled. Spathe 20–40(–60) cm, ovate-lanceolate, with ± undulate margins, deep brownish-purple inside, greenish outside. Appendix of spadix equalling spathe, narrowly lanceolate, rather stout, dark purple. Female and male flowering zones almost contiguous, the former yellow, the latter purple; sterile flowers lacking or inconspicuous. Berries orange-red.

With tuberous rootstock. Leaves all basal, long-petiolate; blade hastate or sagittate. Scape 10–30 cm, erect, often brownish-purple-spotted. Spathe 3–6 cm, with margins fused in lower 2/3 to form a closed tube around the flowers; tube whitish or pale green with olive-green to purplish longitudinal stripes; limb of spathe forming a curved roof. Spadix cylindrical to slightly clavate, protruding from the tube and bent forwards under the spathe limb. Female flowers 4–6, contiguous with the more numerous male flowers. Infructescence dense, with depressed-globose berries.
