Stout, erect perennial 40–90(–130) cm tall; stem ± arachnoid-tomentose, sparingly branched above, often purplish. Leaves 1- or 2-pinnatifid, rather widely spaced, strongly spiny-dentate, greyish-green with whitish veins above, glandular-puberulent above, white-tomentose beneath. Synflorescence spherical, 3.5–6 cm in diam., greenish-white. Phyllaries ± glabrous, the inner usually free. Florets pale blue or whitish.
