Centaurea benedicta (L.) L.

Centaurea benedicta (L.) L. συνώνυμο: Cnicus benedictus L.
Annual, with ascending, sparingly branched stems 5–20 cm, leafy especially above. Leaves pinnatifid or dentate, with weak marginal spines. Capitula solitary, often one basal, subsessile and the others terminal and closely subtended by large leaves. Involucre broadly ovoid, 15–20 mm in diam. Phyllaries with pectinatespinulose appendage. Florets yellow. Achenes 7–8 mm, broadly cylindrical, with conspicuous lateral hilum, pale greyish-brown, shiny, with c. 20 strong ribs and an apical ring of broadly triangular teeth; pappus consisting of an outer row of c. 12 straight bristles equalling achene, and an inner row of much shorter, fimbriate bristles.
