Carex illegitima Ces.
Caespitose; also with short, stout rhizomes. Stems 20–40 cm, erect, with somewhat swollen base. Basal sheaths blackish-brown, persistent, firmly enclosing stem. Leaves 1.5–3 mm wide, erect, exceeding stem, glaucous-green, rather rigid, with serrulate margins, tapering into long, setaceous apex. Spikes 2–5, all with 2–5 well separated female flowers below and 5–15 more densely placed male flowers above (occasionally uppermost spike entirely male). Female glumes reddish-brown. Utricles 5–6 mm, ellipsoid, yellowish-green, obscurely veined, with indistinct beak. Stigmas 3.
