Polypogon monspeliensis (L.) Desf.
Polypogon maritimus: Annual, often forming small tufts. Culms geniculately ascending to suberect, 15–40 cm. Leaf blade 1–4 mm wide, usually flat; ligule up to 6 mm, membranous; uppermost sheath slightly inflated and sometimes enclosing base of panicle. Panicle 2–6 cm, dense but ± lobed, with numerous 1-flowered spikelets. Glumes 2–3 mm, subequal, indurate and ± bristly below, long-ciliate on upper margins, 2-lobed, with a straight, slender apical awn 5–8 mm. Lemma half as long as glumes, truncate, without awn.
Very similar to P. maritimus, but often larger; leaf blade up to 8 mm wide; ligule up to 10 mm long; panicle 3–12 cm; glumes minutely ciliate on upper margins, shortly dentate at apex, ± emarginate with awn 5–7 mm arising from the sinus; lemma denticulate at apex, with a terminal awn 1–1.5 mm.
