Leaves mostly basal, somewhat glaucous; blade setaceous, flat or folded; sheaths all smooth, glabrous; blades never hairy; ligule of cauline leaves long (usually c. 3 mm), acute. Panicle oblong-ovoid, rather lax, often suffused purple. Spikelets 4–6 mm, 3- or 4-flowered; glumes and lemmas acute. Lemma, if normally developed, with a tuft of long, tangled hairs at base; sides often puberulent; hairs on keel and marginal veins usually appressed. Spikelets usually viviparous (proliferating), i.e. flowers replaced by vegetative propagules forming greenish tails.
