Carthamus dentatus Vahl
Erect, rather rigid annual, 20–80 cm tall. Stem strawcoloured, sparsely glandular-pubescent and arachnoid-tomentose, usually simple below and ± corymbosely branched above. Cauline leaves amplexicaul, ovate-lanceolate, spiny-dentate, acuminate. Involucre oblong to narrowly ovoid, 12–15 mm in diam. Inner phyllaries with scarious, dentate appendage. Florets pinkish-mauve or pale purplish. Achenes c. 4 mm, with pappus of brownish, ciliate scales up to 3 times as long as achene.
