Erect annual, usually 20–80 cm tall; stem angular or striate, often with red spots in leaf axils; whole plant ± greyfarinose. Leaves alternate, rather long-petiolate; blade of lower leaves narrowly ovate, cuneate at base, entire, shallowly 3-lobed or slighly dentate. Inflorescence terminal, ± paniculate. Perianth segments 5, dorsally keeled, persistent. Seed horizontal, 1.2–1.6 mm, roundish-lenticular, with slightly acute edges; testa with faint radial striae, otherwise almost smooth.
