Many-stemmed, bushy, very spiny perennial. Stems 20–50 cm, ascending to suberect, simple or branched only at base, densely leafy, ± arachnoid-tomentose, eglandular. Leaves coriaceous, (1–)2-pinnatisect with winged rhachis, grey-tomentose at least beneath; segments linearlanceolate, produced into sharp spines. Synflorescence solitary, terminal, globose, 3–6 cm in diam. Inner phyllaries rigid, connate for at least the basal third. Florets deep blue.
