Emex spinosa (L.) Campd.
Monoecious annual or short-lived perennial, somewhat fleshy. Stems procumbent to suberect, usually 15–40 cm. Lower leaves long-petiolate; blade 3–10 cm, oblongovate, truncate to cordate at base. Flowers in small, well separated axillary whorls. Perianth persistent, indurate and forming a cover c. 5 mm long around the fruit, the outer 3 segments developing spiny, patent or deflexed tips. Nutlet c. 3 mm, ovoid, rounded at base, trigonous at apex, included in perianth.
