Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P.Beauv.

Robust annual; culm(s) solitary or loosely tufted, 30–80 cm, ascending to erect. Leaves long, flaccid, 5–15 mm wide, with strong whitish midrib; margins smooth or slightly scabridulous. Ligule absent. Inflorescence usually lax, with several unilateral racemes arranged along a central axis. Longest raceme 3–10 cm, often with short secondary branches at base. Spikelets 3–4 mm, in 2 irregular rows, elliptical, with 2 florets, the lower male or sterile. Lemma of upper floret scabrid, usually tapering to a straight awn 10–20 mm (sometimes lacking); palea hard, smooth, greenish-white.
