Rigid perennial with one to several erect stems, 20–70 cm tall, usually corymbosely branched above; whole plant subglabrous or sparsely arachnoid-tomentose. Leaves ovate-lanceolate, ± amplexicaul, spinose-dentate to pinnatifid. Capitula solitary on short branches. Involucre broadly campanulate, 18–28 mm in diam. Outer phyllaries spinose-dentate, the inner resembling ligules, 10–16 mm, straw-coloured to brownish-yellow, shiny. Florets yellow. Achenes c. 2.5 mm, with long pappus of plumose hairs. Subsp. curetum (Halácsy) Rech. f. (syn.: C. curetum Halácsy) has deeply divided leaves with narrow lobes tapering into long spines.
