Phytolacca americana L.
Short-lived perennial herb, slightly woody at base, 1–2 m tall. Stem erect, robust, sparingly branched, often tinged red, with decurrent ridges from leaf bases. Leaves shortpetiolate; blade 10–25 cm, elliptical to oblong-lanceolate, entire. Flowers on short, patent pedicels in a rather lax raceme, 10–15 cm long and erect in flower, pendent in fruit. Flowers ± regular, hermaphrodite. Sepals 2–3 mm, greenish-white. Petals lacking. Stamens 10. Fruit subglobose, 8–10 mm in diam., consisting of c. 10 1-seeded carpels, purplish-black and juicy when mature.
