Rhamnus lycioides L.

Rigid, densely and intricately branched, deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub usually 50–100 cm tall. Branches usually alternate, ± divaricate, terminating in a sharp thorn. Leaves opposite or fascicled, short-petiolate; blade entire, very variable in shape but usually 5–15 mm, oblanceolate to narrowly obovate, entire or serrulate. Flowers in axillary clusters, small, 4-merous, usually unisexual, greenish-yellow. Calyx teeth triangular-lanceolate, acute. Petals absent or very small. Drupe 4–6 mm, broadly obovoid, often distintly 2-lobed, smooth and glabrous, finally dark red.
