Erect, rigid, much branched, evergreen shrublet 30–100 cm tall. Leaves reduced to small, scarious scales. Ultimate branches (cladodes) flattened and leaf-like, 12–20 × 4–12 mm, ovate or broadly lanceolate, rigid, dark green and glabrous, tapering to a sharp, pungent apex. Flowers usually unisexual, in small clusters just below middle of cladodes. Perianth small, whitish, with 6 ± recurved segments, the outer 2.5–3 mm, the inner smaller. Fruit a globose, scarlet berry 10–15 mm in diam., only one fruit developing on each cladode.
