Phalaris aquatica L.
Perennial with a short, oblique rhizome. Culms ± erect from geniculately ascending base. Lower 1–3 internodes short and often tuberously swollen (moniliform). Leaf blade flat, long-acute, up to 5 mm wide; sheaths smooth, not or scarcely inflated; ligule up to 4 mm, truncate. Panicle 3–8 cm, dense, oblong-cylindrical, usually grey with a purplish tinge. Glumes 6–7 mm, acute, winged in the distal part, the wings tapering to apex. Sterile lemma(s) 1(–2), minute. Anthers 3–3.5 mm.
