Cirsium vulgare (Savi) Ten.
Biennial or short-lived perennial, usually 60–100 cm tall. Stem sparsely arachnoid-tomentose, branched above, with spiny wings. Cauline leaves green and pungentsetose above, grey-tomentose beneath, pinnatisect with few, narrowly triangular-lanceolate segments tapering into sharp spine. Capitula pedunculate, without subtending leaves. Involucre broadly ovoid, 22–35 mm in diam., ± arachnoid-tomentose. Phyllaries linear-lanceolate, the lower patent to somewhat reflexed, the upper erecto-patent, all tapering into sharp spine. Florets pinkish-purple. Achenes c. 3.5 mm, with pappus up to 30 mm.
