Centaurea spruneri Boiss. & Heldr.
Centaurea euboica: Robust, erect perennial 50–80 cm tall, sparingly branched. Lower leaves 1- or 2-pinnatisect, green, scabridulous. Capitula solitary; involucre subglobose, 20–28 mm in diam. Middle phyllaries with large, ovate, straw-coloured appendage extended into a strong apical spine 10–20 mm, with several pairs of lateral spinules or fimbriae. Florets rose-pink. Achenes 4–5.5 mm, with pappus twice as long.
Differing from C. euboica and related species mainly in the shape of phyllary and appendage. In C. spruneri the apical spine is brownish and clearly set off from the pale greenish phyllary, which has marginal fimbriae in the upper part. In C. achaia, C. euboica, etc., both phyllary and appendage are straw-coloured and merge into each other, with fimbriae on the appendage.
