Parapholis filiformis: Slender annual, decumbent or usually erect, (5–)10–25 cm; nodes 2–5, blackish. Leaf sheaths not or scarcely inflated; blade convolute, with scabrid ribs. Spike usually 5–12 cm, very narrow, straight or slightly curved, with 10–20 1-flowered spikelets partly sunk in cavities of the rhachis. Spikelets 4–6 mm, slightly longer than internodes. Glumes 2, inserted side by side, narrowly lanceolate, 3-ribbed, with winged keel. Anthers c. 3 mm. 2n = 14.
Resembling P. filiformis, but often shorter and more robust; upper leaf sheaths inflated; spikes relatively thick, usually strongly curved; keel of glumes not winged; cleistogamous with short anthers (0.5–0.9 mm). 2n = 38.
