Glabrous perennial, forming small clumps. Basal internode(s) swollen, forming 1(–2) ovoid bulbs. Culms 40–130 cm, usually erect, with 3–6 nodes. Leaf blade flat, generally 3–8 mm wide, with clasping basal auricles; ligule 0.5–2.5 mm, membranous. Inflorescence a dense, somewhat flattened spike 6–13 cm × 6–10 mm, with fragile rhachis and spikelets arranged in groups of 3 at each node. Central spikelet in each group hermaphrodite, the lateral male. Both glumes and lemma tapering into long, straight, scabridulous awn. Anthers 5–8 mm, yellow or tinged violet.
