Erect annual 10–30 cm tall, usually branched from base. Leaves 3-pinnatifid with linear ultimate segments. Flowers terminal, solitary, flat. Sepals patent to slightly deflexed, c. 2/3 as long as petals, glabrous or with few straight hairs at base. Petals 4–10 mm, patent, yellow or bright red, usually with a blackish blotch at base. Fruiting head 8–25 × 6–8 mm, cylindrical to slightly conical. Achenes 2.3–3(–3.5) mm, with a prominent convex hump; beak slightly incurved, greenish-black in upper part.
