Cyperus longus: Rhizomatous perennial. Rhizome rather thick, with reddish-brown scale leaves; tubers lacking. Stem generally 40–90 cm tall. Leaves 2–10 mm wide, flat, scattered along stem and usually shorter than it. Inflorescence with 2–6 narrow bracts, the longest ± equalling inflorescence. Rays 2–10, slender, very unequal, the longest usually more than 10 cm. Spikelets 4–25 × 1–2 mm, linearoblong; rhachilla winged. Glumes distichous, 2–3 mm, mucronate, reddish-brown to dark brown. Stamens 3. Nut trigonous.

Cyperus rotundus: Resembling C. longus, but rhizome slender, with sparse, narrow scales and sometimes tubers; stems often shorter with leaves only at base; longest ray less than 10 cm.
