Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.
Robust, short-lived perennial with creeping rhizome; culms generally 40–120 cm tall, short-pubescent on nodes. Leaf blade flat, 4–12 mm wide, smooth or scabridulous, with prominent midrib beneath; ligule short, membranous. Inflorescence a large, lax panicle. Spikelets in pairs of one sessile, hermaphrodite and one pedicellate, narrower, male or sterile. Sessile spikelet 4–5 mm, ellipsoid, seemingly 1-flowered (a second floret reduced to a hyaline lemma). Glumes equal, subcoriaceous and somewhat shiny, usually with silky pubescence in lower half. Lemma shorter, with or without a geniculate awn.
