Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.
Robust perennial with long-creeping rhizomes. Culms erect, 1–3(–4) m tall, usually 5–10 mm in diam., clothed with leaf sheaths, dying back in winter. Leaves up to 50 × 4 cm, greyish-green, usually with a transverse mark near middle, tapering to a long, slender apex. Ligule a row of hairs. Panicle large, much-branched, rather dense, suffused brownish-violet, finally nodding. Spikelets 10–16 mm, 2–6-flowered, with long, ± silvery rhachillahairs.
