Stout biennial or short-lived perennial up to 3 m tall, woody at base, stellate-tomentose on twigs. Lower leaves long-petiolate; blade suborbicular to reniform, up to 20 cm wide, cordate, shallowly 5–7-lobed. Flowers in clusters of 3–7 on slender pedicels in leaf axils. Epicalyx segments 3, united at base, broadly ovate, obtuse, longer and wider than sepals, accrescent and spreading in fruit. Petals 15–20 mm, pinkish-lilac, truncate. Mericarps transversely rugose, usually stellate-pubescent.
