Perennial, usually strongly woody and gnarled at base. Stems several, ascending, 10–25 cm long, simple or sparingly branched, brittle. Leaves ± pinnatisect with large terminal segment and subobtuse teeth, of rather thick texture, dark green or somewhat glaucous. Calyx 2–4 mm, with ovate lobes, glabrous. Corolla 5–9 mm; upper lip dark brownish-purple. Staminode reniform to orbicular. Capsule broadly ovoid, up to 2.5 times as long as calyx.

Erect annual. Stem 20–70 cm tall, simple or sparingly branched, 4-angled, glabrous or somewhat glandular-pubescent. Leaves usually opposite, distinctly petiolate; blade 3–8 cm, ovate, ± cordate at base, coarsely crenate-serrate, thin, subglabrous. Flowers in laxly arranged, usually 3-flowered cymes; bracts triangular-lanceolate. Cayx lobes triangular-ovate, acute, without scarious margins. Corolla 6–9 mm, dark reddish-brown. Capsule c. 6 mm, broadly ovoid to subglobose, acute.

Biennial or short-lived perennial with several ascending stems 20–80 cm, rather thinly grey-tomentose throughout. Basal and lower cauline leaves obovate to oblanceolate, distinctly sinuate-undulate. Stem simple or sparingly branched; cauline leaves not decurrent. Inflorescence with subsessile flowers in dense clusters of 2–6, the lower remote, the upper ± confluent. Calyx 6–12 mm, divided to at least 2/3 into lanceolate lobes. Corolla 25–40 mm in diam., yellow. Stamens 5, all with white-woolly filaments and reniform anthers. Capsule 4–6 mm, broadly ellipsoid, glabrescent.

Biennial, shortly greyish- or yellowish-tomentose throughout when young, often glabrescent with green mature leaves. Stem usually simple, erect, 30–90 cm. Inflorescence freely branched, forming a broad panicle. Basal leaves  oblong-spathulate, lobed or pinnatifid, usually undulate; upper leaves ovate-lanceolate, entire, sometimes decurrent. Flowers short-pedicellate in distinctly separated clusters. Corolla 15–30 mm in diam., yellow, with pellucid glands. Stamens 5, all with violet-woolly filaments and reniform anthers. Capsule subglobose, glabrescent.
