Scapes equalling or exceeding leaves, striate or slightly sulcate, short-pubescent. Spike usually 4–12 cm, linear. Bracts ± equalling sepals, glabrous, green. Corolla tube c. 2 mm, glabrous; lobes less than 1 mm, triangular. Seeds numerous.

Loosely tufted with a long, sparingly branched, slightly woody rootstock bearing terminal leaf rosettes. Leaves suberect, 4–15 cm long, linear-lanceolate to -oblanceolate, often with undulate margins, sericeous-lanate. Scapes usually solitary from each rosette, twice as long as leaves, terete, tomentose. Flowers in an oblong-cylindrical spike usually 2–5 cm, often lax below. Bracts c. 4 mm, broadly ovate with prominent midvein but otherwise membranous, ciliate. Sepals similar to bracts. Corolla tube glabrous; lobes c. 2 mm, ovate, spreading to deflexed, straw-coloured to brownish. Stamens long exserted, with white anthers. Seeds 2, c. 2.5 mm.

Acaulescent annual, with a single rosette of usually several suberect, linear-oblanceolate, patent-pilose leaves 3–8 cm. Scapes few to several, 3–15 cm, ± erect at anthesis, sometimes arcuate in fruit but not thickened, patent-pilose and also with much shorter eglandular hairs. Spike shortly cylindrical or occasionally ovoid, usually 1–3 cm. Bracts lanceolate, pilose, the lowest c. 6 mm, the upper similar but shorter. Corolla tube c. 3.5 mm, glabrous; lobes c. 2 mm, ovate-lanceolate, shortly acuminate. Stamens long-exserted. Seeds 2, c. 1.5 mm.

Erect annual, 5–30 cm tall, single-stemmed or sparingly branched. Stem terete, often tinged purple, eglandular-puberulent below, with rather dense, short glandular pubescence above. Leaves opposite, 10–40 mm, linearlanceolate, entire or remotely serrate, slightly glandular-and eglandular-pubescent. Flowers in dense, ovoid, pedunculate spikes in upper leaf axils. Bracts uniform, 3.5–6 mm, with ovate base and shortly acuminate apex, with scarious margins below, without lateral veins, glandular-pubescent. Sepals resembling bracts. Corolla tube c. 3.5 mm, glabrous, rugose; lobes 2–2.5 mm, narrowly ovate, spreading to deflexed, cream. Seeds 2, c. 2.2 mm, narrowly oblong.

Plantago coronopus L. (συμπεριλαμβάνεται και το Plantago weldenii Rchb.): Acaulescent annual or biennial, usually with a single, ± flat leaf rosette. Leaves very variable but usually 5–12 cm, oblanceolate in outline, remotely dentate to 2-pinnatisect, sparsely pilose. Scapes usually numerous, variable in length, spreading or ascending. Spike narrowly cylindrical. Corolla tube 2–3 mm, pilose; lobes short (c. 1 mm). Capsule 3-locular with 3–6 seeds c. 1 mm.

Δίπλα στη θάλασσα συνήθως. Οι βοτανικοί δεν έχουν ξεκαθαρίσει τις διαφορές μεταξύ των 2 ειδών, coronopus και weldenii. Τα παρακάτω link οδηγούν και στις 2 ονομασίες. Εμείς ακολουθούμε τη γραμμή της Ελληνικής Βοτανικής Εταιρείας που θεωρεί ότι το coronopus είναι διαφορετικό είδος και δεν υπάρχει στην Στερεά Ελλάδα. Annual with a thin taproot. Leaves usually in a single rosette, 3–10(–15) cm, lanceolate to oblanceolate, 3–5-veined, acute, glabrous to sparsely hirsute. Scapes usually several, ascending to erect, exceeding leaves, entire or remotely dentate, glabrous to sparsely appressed-pubescent. Spike 1–3 cm, narrowly ovoid to broadly cylindrical, dense. Bracts 2.5–5 mm, ovate to lanceolate, densely clothed with long hairs. Anterior sepals connate for more than half their length. Corolla tube c. 2 mm, glabrous. Style long-exserted. Seeds 2, c. 1.8 mm.
