Evergreen shrub 1–5 m tall. Leaves usually in whorls of 3, 6–30 cm, very narrowly elliptical, acute, coriaceous, with prominent midrib and many fine, spreading, parallel lateral veins. Flowers in terminal cymes, large and showy. Corolla 25–45 mm in diam., bright rose-pink, with conspicuous, laciniate appendages in throat; lobes twisted in bud. Follicles 1 or 2, cylindrical or very narrowly ellipsoid, 10–16 cm long. Seeds pubescent, with apical coma of brownish hairs.

Vinca major L.

Vinca herbacea: Perennial herb with a short, woody rhizome bearing coarse, tough roots. Stems ascending and trailing, 15–50 cm, dying down completely in the winter. Leaves opposite, elliptical, thin and dark green, with obsolete lateral veins. Flowers solitary in leaf axils; pedicel exceeding subtending leaf. Corolla 20–35 mm in diam., usually dark purplish-blue.

Differing from V. herbacea in the following characters: More or less evergreen, woody at base, with ascending flowering stems up to 40 cm and long, trailing nonflowering stems; leaves ovate to broadly ovate, somewhat coriaceous, with conspicuous lateral veins; pedicel shorter than or equalling subtending leaf; corolla larger (30–50 mm in diam.) and often paler.
