Selaginella denticulata (L.) Spring

Small, moss-like perennial with creeping, branched stems 4–10 cm, forming mats, green in winter and early spring, later often turning reddish. Leaves in 4 ranks, thin; those of the 2 lateral ranks c. 2 mm, ovate, acute to apiculate, serrulate; those of the upper 2 ranks smaller. Sporangia grouped in spike-like, terminal strobili 10–20 mm, with female megasporangia at the base and male microsporangia at the top. Sporangium solitary at the base of a bract-like sporophyll; female sporangia with only 4 megaspores.
