Typha domingensis Pers.
Typha angustifolia: Aquatic or semi-aquatic, rhizomatous perennial. Stem erect, simple, up to 2 m tall. Leaves mostly basal, distichous, erect, overtopping stem; sheath usually auriculate; blade 4–8 mm wide. Flowers minute and very numerous, in a dense terminal spike with female flowers below and male above, female and male parts being separated by a gap of 2–6 cm. Female spike cylindrical, 8–20 × 1.5–2.5 cm, dark cinnamon brown when ripe; spathulate, rather firm, apically dark brown scales present between the female flowers. Male spike ± equalling the female.
Very similar to T. angustifolia, but leaf sheath ± tapering into blade; female spike thicker, rather pale brown; scales between female flowers thin, fragile, pale brown.
