Polypodium cambricum L.
Polypodium vulgare: Rhizome horizontally creeping at or near the ground, simple or sparingly branched, densely covered with ovate, acuminate brown scales 3–6 mm. Leaves in 2 ranks (new leaves produced in early summer), well separated, 15–40 cm. Petiole 1/2–2/3 as long as blade, slender, glabrous. Blade lanceolate, pinnatifid to pinnate. Pinnae oblong-lanceolate, entire, the basal pair not projecting forwards; secondary veins with 1–3 bifurcations. Sori in 1 row on each side of the midrib, orbicular, without indusium. Annulus of sporangium with 11–15 indurated cells; no paraphysis (pale, branched cell bands) present in sori [microscopic characters]. Tetraploid with 2n = 148.
Resembling P. vulgare, but differing in the following characters: Rhizome scales 5–15 mm, narrowly lanceolate; blade generally broader, with basal pair of pinnae projecting forwards; secondary veins with 3–5 bifurcations; annulus of sporangium with 4–10 indurated cells; paraphysis present in sori. Diploid with 2n = 74.
