Carex extensa Gooden.
Carex distans: Caespitose, 20–60 cm tall; stems rigid, subterete to bluntly trigonous. Basal sheaths brown. Leaves shorter than stem, often only half as long, suberect, somewhat stiff, 2–4 mm wide, flat, greyish-green. Female spikes 2–4, all distant, the lowest usually by middle of stem, shortly cylindrical, dense, suberect. Lowest bract longer than spike but shorter than inflorescence. Utricles 3.5–4.5 mm (incl. beak), erecto-patent, broadly ovoid to ellipsoid, rather conspicuously veined, glabrous, pale greenish-brown, not shining, contracted into a bifid beak c. 1 mm. Stigmas 3. Nutlet trigonous. Male spike usually solitary.
Resembling C. distans, but strictly maritime and differing in the following characters: Basal sheaths blackish-brown; stem trigonous; leaves about as long as stem, 1–3 mm wide, channelled or with inrolled margins; upper female spikes crowded, the lowest distant; lowest bract distinctly exceeding inflorescence; utricles gradually narrowed into a short beak.
