Perennial herb with a woody rootstock and a few ascending to erect, sparingly branched stems 10–30 cm long. Most leaves in a basal rosette, often appressed to the ground, ± pinnatifid and crenate, green on both sides. Verticillasters 4–8-flowered, usually distant below and aggregated above. Floral leaves somewhat shorter than calyx, greenish. Calyx campanulate, 5–7 mm at anthesis, glandular- and eglandular-pubescent; upper lip with 3 short teeth. Corolla 8–14 mm, lilac-purple; upper lip slightly curved.
