Αρούνδος ο δόναξ (Arundo donax L.)
Very large, rhizomatous perennial. Stems up to 5 m tall, perennial, ± woody, with numerous nodes. Leaf sheaths smooth, glabrous, covering the nodes; blade up to 6 cm wide, glaucous, cordate, somewhat sinuate and strawcoloured at base. Ligule replaced by a line of hairs. Inflorescence a large, lax panicle 30–60 cm, often greyish-purple. Spikelets 11–18 mm, usually with 3 florets. Glumes equalling florets. Lemma rounded on the back, pilose in lower part, 2-fid with a short awn in the middle.
